Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants are devices that take the place of the inner ear by sending electric impulses to the hearing nerve. They are a last resort for people who cannot be helped by hearing aids alone due to the severity of the hearing loss. The surgery is performed by an ear, nose, and throat specialist who specializes in cochlear implants. The first step, however, is to try to receive benefit from advanced hearing aid technology. Dr. DeVore can advise you if you are a candidate for a cochlear implant and set you up to try the newest hearing aid technology before making that important decision. A cochlear implant surgery is permanent and the patient cannot go back to wearing a hearing aid in that ear if the surgery or outcome is not successful. If a cochlear implant is recommended, she can refer you to a specialist in that area.
